Review: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bites

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bites, in a portion size fit for stuffing one's face in movie theatre.

When was the last time you plopped a spoonful of uncooked muffin batter into your mouth, or eagerly chowed down on a chunk of raw bread dough before putting a loaf in the oven? But cookie dough? Who hasn’t tasted (and savoured) raw cookie dough?

Cookie Dough Bites aims to recreate the blissful experience of eating raw cookie dough, but with an added coating of milk chocolate – and it succeeds. Instead of the crunch of a baked cookie, you get the rough, dry, grainy uncooked texture of cookie dough. The taste isn’t quite as good (and fresh) as eating your own raw cookie dough, but it’s close enough.

Is it an everyday snack? No. I’d place it in the movie-theatre-treat category. Will it replace eating raw chocolate chip cookie dough? No. Part of the thrill of eating cookie dough is the risk of getting caught by your tut-tutting significant other with your hand in the mixing bowl.

Or so I’ve heard.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bites are covered in chocolate, too. Because who can have enough chocolate?

RATINGS AND DETAILS

Cost: $1 (on sale!) for a 4 oz. (113 gram) box at Walgreens in Seattle.

Value for cash money: At that price, excellent. At movie theatre prices, probably less excellent.

Availability: U.S.A. I’ve personally never seen them in Canada.

Nutrition?: 200 calories per 40 grams, so roughly 600 calories per box. Eat the whole box and you’ll hit 100 per cent of your daily value of saturated fat. Eek.

Egg free!: That’s what the box says. Which is good, because eating raw egg has always been the one thing that bugged me about eating cookie dough.

The verdict: Good. I’ll have to track down some of the other dough flavours next time I’m in the States.
