Review: Bounce Natural Energy Ball, fudgie walnut flavour

Bounce Natural Energy Ball, fudgie walnut flavour

I’ve seen plenty of energy bars before, but an energy ball? Isn’t that just a polite way of selling a smaller, rounder energy bar? We’ll see …

The Pitch: This Fudgie Walnut Brain Storm flavour is described as “a chewy mix of nuts, carob and seeds.” Also: GM-free and gluten-free, with no artificial preservatives, flavours or colours. In other words, a product perfectly suited to Planet Organic.

The Look: A light purple, blue and beige wrapper keeps the energy ball safe, while the ball itself looks like a misshapen lump of chocolate fudge rolled in walnuts. It doesn’t look overly appetizing.

The Taste: In the first bite, I got a chunk of walnut shell. (Booo!) It’s dry and tastes vaguely fermented. I think I’m tasting a lot of brown rice products in the mix. The texture isn’t great (like a dry mush with embedded seeds), and the aroma of energy bar hits you as soon as you unwrap it. It’s got that characteristic energy bar taste, too. There’s carob, there’s walnut, and there’s some sesame. Interesting, but not my kind of thing.

RATINGS AND DETAILS

Cost: $1.99 for a 42-gram energy ball at Planet Organic.

Value for cash money: Pretty terrible, frankly. A larger, more filling Clif Bar would cost about the same or less.

Availability: Planet Organic. The package says it’s made in the U.S., and it lists distributors in Canada, Australia and India, so it shouldn’t be terribly hard to find elsewhere.

Nutrition?: Per 42-gram ball: 180 calories, 9 grams of fat, 90 mg of sodium, 3 grams of fibre, 5 grams of protein.

Vegan friendly?: Yes!

Not to be confused with: The laundry product, the radio station, or the thing that Tiggers do best.

The verdict: Meh. I’ll pass.
