Review: Ho, ho, ho! Starbucks Peppermint Brownie Cake Pops

Just in time for the holidays … Starbucks Peppermint Brownie Cake Pops!

The last time I wrote about Starbucks’ cake pops, I learned two things:

  1. They’re popular. Throngs of friendly internet people found their way to my last review, and, many months later, it’s still one of the most popular things on the site. Go figure.
  2. They’re polarizing. Some people love them, and others dislike them (a lot). Personally, I enjoy them, though not all are equally good. I’ve picked one up a few times since I wrote the last review, though they’re not an everyday thing.

And so, how could I resist revisiting cake pops now that a new flavour has appeared? This time, it’s a special holiday-season treat: peppermint brownie cake pops.

This Starbucks Peppermint Brownie Cake Pop is a thing of beauty.

The Pitch: “A sweet little treat to celebrate the season. Our Peppermint Brownie Cake Pop is a mix of chocolate cake combined with butter cream icing and candy cane pieces, dipped in white chocolate and sprinkled with candy cane bits.”

The Look: A golf-ball sized chunk of mushed-up cake and icing, jabbed on a stick, coated with white chocolate and rolled in crushed red and white peppermint candy cane. Very festive, yet not too frilly.

The Taste: A dense, doughy ball of chocolate cake with a perfect amount of peppermint. Little bits of molten candy cane are embedded in the cake, and the crunchy candy on the chocolate shell makes the texture interesting. It’s sweet, yes, but it isn’t as relentlessly sweet as the candy cane hot chocolate at Tim Hortons. Just the right size to satisfy a chocolate-mint craving. With a hot mug of Starbucks’ Christmas Blend, this would be bliss.

Note the little bits of liquid candy in the cake part of a Starbucks Peppermint Brownie Cake Pop. They were unexpected … but delicious.

RATINGS AND DETAILS

Cost: $1.60 (I think) at a Starbucks in Calgary.

Value for cash money: Good.

Availability: Canada? Certainly. America? Possibly. I couldn’t find any mention of them on the Starbucks U.S. website when I looked. Maybe we got them early in Canada?

Nutrition?: I think the sign at the pastry case said less than 200 calories per cake pop. That’s all the info I have. (UPDATE! Here’s a link to Peppermint Brownie Cake Pop nutritional info on the Starbucks website. -ii)

The verdict: The best cake pop from Starbucks so far. Should pair delightfully with coffee – a theory I plan to test, repeatedly.

Pretty!

  1. disgustingly sweet–not a decent replacement
    for the peppermint brownie

  2. I had this at a Louisiana Starbucks. It was way too minty. Yes I know it’s rolled in peppermint, but the mint is way to overpowering. I couldn’t even taste the chocolate. I’d rather make my own pops.
