The package is all egg-carton awesomeness. Who wouldn’t buy a package like this, right?

There’s something great about packaging that makes you say, “Amazing. Why hasn’t anyone thought of this before?” For every 500 impossible-to-open plastic clamshell packaging nightmares, someone does something brilliant that makes me smile. Often, that company is Apple. This week, that company is Cadbury.

Cadbury’s latest egg-shaped Easter treat, Cadbury L’il Scoops Chocolatey Mousse, looks, at first glance, like the ubiquitous Cadbury Crème Egg, but comes in a tiny four-egg carton. This carton, one must note, is absolutely adorable. It’s purple, it’s cardboard, and it’s the kind of thing that makes you want to drop five bucks on it, even though you probably shouldn’t.

Much like Terry’s Chocolate Orange, this is a participatory treat that requires some thought before and during consumption. Instead of a whack-and-unwrap proposition, these encourage the eater to peel off the wrapper, crack off the top of the shell, and feast on the chocolate mousse filling inside with the help of the enclosed spoon. Super concept.

The Pitch: “4 Milk Chocolatey Eggs with CHOCOLATEY Mousse Filling.” Also: “1. Peel. 2. Crack. 3. Spoon.”

The Look: The packaging is perfect: a purple cardboard egg carton wrapped in a cardboard band. Inside, there are two spoons and four foil-wrapped eggs. Each egg looks like a Cadbury Crème Egg, but with a clearly marked chocolate crack indent on the shell. That’s where you jab the spoon to pop it open and access the mousse. Think of it as a chili bread bowl, where you first eat the chili (mousse), then the bread bowl (chocolate shell).

The Taste: The mousse is overly sweet with a nasty chemical twang, like bad supermarket chocolate cake frosting. The fat tastes oily, not creamy. The aftertaste is not pleasant, and it lingers. The shell is better, but not particularly good. It tasted of the mousse filling, and it got very soft and melty very quickly. The shell was too sweet, quite oily, and without anything to recommended it over the plain milk-chocolate bars on the rack year-round.

RATINGS AND DETAILS

Cost: $4.99 for a 4-egg (136 g) package at Calgary Co-op.

Value for cash money: Meh.

Availability: There’s an Easter bunny on the wrapper, so seasonal is my guess.

Nutrition?: Per 1 egg (34 grams): 200 calories, 13 grams of fat, 25 mg of sodium, 1 gram of fibre, 2 grams of protein.

The verdict: Avoid. Don’t fall for the cute packaging. Buy a regular Cadbury Crème Egg instead.

Second opinion from Aline: “This is the worst mousse I’ve ever tasted.” She also found the mousse very oily, and the chocolate mediocre.

  1. Brenna and I just saw these at the grocery store today and I resisted the urge to buy them. Seeing this review makes me happy that I stuck with a cream egg instead 🙂 Thanks for the review!

  2. I bought this at the store the other day as I thought they were Milka Little Scoops. Same company I guess? To my surprise they were $6 a package! What a rip off if you ask me. The taste is alright but still not worth the money I paid for them. They used to be almost $4 last year. I did however end up with the white mousse ones. I didn’t know they had chocolate filled ones as well. Next time I walk by I will look away.

  3. The Vanilla ones have an odd almost chemical aftertaste. I bought 2 packages (8 eggs in total), tried an egg from each package with the same aftertaste. Complete waste of money.

    • It’s baffling, isn’t it? Like, did nobody notice the gnarly chemical twang during the extensive product creation, testing and evaluation process?

  4. THESE ARE NOT A CADBURY CREATION! Cadbury stole the idea from the longtime success of Milka’s L’il Scoops. They are both owned by Mondelez Internation. Other than the labels both look almost the same. See original here:

  5. I actually cannot stand cadbury cream eggs. These guys are better, but Milka’s were the best. That’s just my personal opinion though. Frankly, cream eggs are disgusting to me, just horrid. But to each his own.
