Review: Bolthouse Farms Mocha Cappuccino protein drink

Bolthouse Farms Mocha Cappuccino protein drink, bottle next to glass. It's thick, rich and delicious.

It took me a long time to finally try a Bolthouse Farms beverage, even though they’re available at almost every grocery store I shop at. Since I’ve been known to enjoy the occasional cup of coffee (*cough* coffee addict *cough, cough*), the mocha cappuccino flavour seemed a decent way to test the Bolthouse waters.

The Pitch: “Our Perfectly Protein Mocha Cappuccino is an intriguing blend of 100% Arabica coffee, Madagascar vanilla extract and premium cocoa. We then add the benefits of whey protein, and the vitamins and minerals C, D, B6, B12, calcium, zinc, magnesium and iron. Its smooth, creamy flavour is unlike any other.”

The Taste: I was concerned that what I’d taste is liquefied protein bar laced with coffee and crushed-up multivitamins. Thankfully, it wasn’t like that at all. It’s thick and smooth, with a sweet chocolatey vanilla coffee flavour that’s similar to a Starbucks bottled Frappuccino, but with a more hefty texture, like cream or a dense soy milk. While you can’t entirely get away from the protein and vitamin tastes, the other flavours do a good job masking them.

RATINGS AND DETAILS

Cost: $3.99 for a 946 mL (32 oz.) bottle at Superstore.

Value for cash money: Not cheap, but not highway robbery.

Availability: Around Edmonton, very easy to find.

Nutrition?: There’s no basic nutrition info on the bottle, but the Bolthouse Farms website has a more thorough breakdown. Per 240 mL serving: 180 calories, 3 grams of fat, 1 gram of fibre, and 8 (EIGHT!) grams of protein. Other vitamins and minerals include (with daily value per 240 mL serving): Vitamin C 150%; calcium 50%; vitamin D 20%; vitamin B6 130%; vitamin B12 140%; magnesium 15%; iron 10%; zinc 20%.

The verdict: Very good. Like a thicker, more protein-ish version of a bottled Starbucks Frappuccino. If you’re looking for yummy protein and vitamins, give it a try. I’ll be buying it again.

  1. Glad to see this reviewed. I have yet to meet a Bolthouse Farms beverage that did not like! The other ‘protein” Bolthouse beverage that I would recommend is the Vanilla Chai Tea.

    • Yes! I just tried the Vanilla Chai one, too. It’s super good. Reminds me of the delicious limited edition chai soy milk from So Nice that showed up a couple years ago, then sadly vanished. That’s the problem with limited edition things, I guess.

  2. I will say this I was having a Starbucks coffee every morning and it was getting to expense, I tried the bolthouse coffee one and I’m sold, gets me though the day better than Starbucks and I was getting 2 extra shots of espresso. Bolthouse is cheaper. Taste good over ice.

  3. I LOVE the Bolthouse Mocha Cappuccino. I put it in a metal coffee mug with a lid and freeze it overnight. It is a delicious frosty drink for in the morning and won’t get watered down by adding ice! I drink one everyday. I found that our local Dollar General sells them for $1 less than other chain stores. It’s a win, win for me!
