Review: Doritos Intense Pickle tortilla chips

I like the green pickle theme on the Doritos Intense Pickle tortilla chips packaging.

The last time I tried a Doritos flavour based on a potato chip seasoning, it was the disastrous Ketchup Doritos, a nasty combination that didn’t work at all. Needless to say, it didn’t last.

Given that history, I was justifiably apprehensive when I spotted these. I’m a sucker for dill pickle potato chips – another one of those food preferences I picked up in childhood and can’t seem to shake – so I buckled and bought a bag. I’m glad I did.

The Pitch: “Doritos intense pickle tortilla chips combine two types of awesome: the tangy taste of pickles with the crunch of Doritos chips.”

The Look: Clearly designed by the same people who make graphics for sports news broadcasts. Nothing subtle here. The pickle background colour and illustration is nice, mind you. It’s easy to spot on a store shelf.

The Taste: Slightly creamy with a whole lot of dill, garlic and sour vinegar, all on top of the standard Doritos tortilla chip base. These easily compete in the same flavour class as dill pickle potato chips. They’ve got the sour zip of salt and vinegar chips, but the garlic and dill are a knockout addition. They’re not stingy on the seasoning. Much better than I was expecting.

Yep. They look like other Doritos chips.

  1. Pickle-flavoured Doritos? I’m still trying to get my head/mind around the ‘Prairie Panko Pickles’ at Hudsons Taphouse. Yup, pickles breaded in Panko crumbs, then deep-fried. But hey, deep-fried Mars bars, deep-fried Oreos…pickles have probably been done ages ago, I just missed ’em!

    • I’d heard mention of deep-fried pickles a while back, but the panko coating must add another curious dimension. As for deep fried Mars bars … they’re interesting. Not good, necessarily, but interesting. 🙂
